I have had the absolute pleasure of having a four-legged friend be a part of my family for as far back as I can remember. I cannot truly remember a long stretch of time when I didn’t have at least 1 dog and I have had as many as 3 at one time. Now, don’t get me wrong, I like cats too; in fact, I have one that is 11 years old, lying on my desk next to my laptop, as I am writing this. But I absolutely LOVE dogs!
In honor of National Puppy Day, which was March 23rd (and I’m a bit late to the party), I could give you the 10 reasons that dogs are simply the BEST, but really there is only need for 1. It is the one that I believe all the others are wrapped up into….
Now, I know, everyone says that dogs are (wo)man’s best friend, they are our protectors, they give us unconditional love, they can empathize with our pain, etc. But isn’t that exactly what loyalty is? As we think about the types of people that we surround ourselves with, aren’t those the exact qualities that we hope to find in our boyfriends, girlfriends, spouses, and friends?
Stay with me…allow me to explain.
We want someone to greet us at the door each night when we come home from a long day’s work. Someone to say, “How was your day? I’m glad you’re home. I missed you.”
We want someone to listen to our hopes, dreams, and our deepest thoughts. Someone we can share our deepest fears and troubles with and know that there is no judgement, only support.
When we feel pain, whether it be physical or emotional, we want someone to empathize with us. Someone to tell us, “It will be okay.”…whether or not we believe it to be true at the time.
We want to feel safe in their presence and know that we have nothing to fear, because they are close.
We want someone to cuddle and snuggle with on cold, lonely winter nights….who am I kidding….warm nights too….any cuddle or snuggle is a good thing.
Somebody that has the ability to lighten up the mood and make us laugh when everything around us seems like it is spinning out of control.
We want a best friend that we can count on until the end of their (your) days.
Simply put, we all deserve someone that makes us a better person; makes our lives happier.
Aren’t all of these qualities part of loyalty? Isn’t this the holy grail of relationships?
Is anyone shocked that dogs are the most popular domesticated pet? Should anyone be surprised that approximately 44% of all US households have at least one dog, compared to 35% with cat(s)?
But wait, so what are we doing wrong as a species? If we have a divorce rate in the US of 40%-50% and it has been said that millennials don’t find the idea of marriage appealing (just ask my son)….then what gives? Why aren’t we our own best friends?
The answer is quite simple, we aren’t acting like dogs. We take everything for granted. We want instant gratification. We want, but don’t give. We need, but don’t reciprocate. We want all of the qualities that come with loyalty, but we don’t show those around us that we are loyal to them.
Ever heard of this….YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE!
Here is my final word for you….BE A DOG! Be the one that has all the qualities of a great, loyal dog. Be that for someone, so they can be that for you.
Are you someone’s dog? I am better at it than some days, but I try….everyday….I try.
Until next week….BE YOU! BE TRUE! BE AMAZING!
